Bahaimedia:Copyrights

Bahai.media takes copyright law seriously. Every media file uploaded to this website must be tagged with a valid license which allows its use on Bahai.media and its sister projects, including Bahaipedia, Bahai.works, and Bahai9.com and their various language versions. At a minimum, a license must allow the file to be hosted on Bahai.media (distribution rights), displayed on Bahai.media and sister websites (reproduction rights), and edited for size (so that, e.g., thumbnails may be generated).

Files hosted on Bahai.media are meant for use on this site and its sister websites; they are not necessarily meant for general use. If you wish to reuse or redistribute files hosted here, it is your responsibility to observe the conditions and restrictions of any and all licenses that may apply. Files meant for general use may be found at Wikimedia Commons.

Allowed content[edit]

The following is a list of the types of licenses allowed on Bahai.media.

Free use[edit]

Free licenses generally grant all or most rights to users of media, allowing general use. Files with a free license may be freely used, shared and modified, although certain rights may be reserved.

  • Public domain. Media that have entered into the public domain have no known copyright restrictions, although they may be subject to the author's moral rights. Creative Commons Zero (CC0) is a license that grants essentially all rights to users: it is therefore roughly equivalent to the public domain for the purposes of Bahai.media.
  • Other free licenses. For media to be considered "free" under Bahai.media's media use policy, the license must permit both commercial use and derivative works. These licenses generally require attribution and may require that derivative works bear a similar license (protective or "share-alike" licenses).
    • Examples: Creative Commons BY and BY-SA; Copyleft

Limited use[edit]

Media files tagged with licenses that grant limited use may be uploaded to Bahai.media as long as their licenses permit it; when deciding to use such files, users must do so according to the stipulations of the license. Files with these licenses may not be suited for general use.

  • Non-commercial licenses. As a non-commercial venture, Bahai.media accepts media that grant non-commercial rights. Such media must be accompanied by an appropriate license tag as a notice to potential users about limitations on use, i.e., prohibition of commercial use.
    • Examples: Creative Commons BY-NC and BY-NC-SA
  • Copyrighted with limited use granted. Bahai.media also accepts copyrighted media that grant limited use according to certain conditions, such as images published by the Bahá'í International Community and certain Bahá'í institutions. Such media must be accompanied by an appropriate license tag which links to official terms of use explaining how the media may be used.
Only media from sources from which permission to publish has been granted may be uploaded here; if you are not sure whether permission has been granted, please contact us before uploading.

Disallowed content[edit]

Certain types of content may not be uploaded to Bahai.media, including content with no license or with a license that prohibits one or more of the minimum requirements (distribution, reproduction, or modification).

No license[edit]

  • Unlicensed copyrighted media. If you are unsure about the copyright status of a media file, do not upload it to Bahai.media.
    • Example: An image you found online; the cover of a book you saw (even if you took a picture of it); etc.
  • Fair use media. Do not upload fair use content on Bahai.media if it is meant for usage in another project like Bahaipedia; such content should be uploaded to the specific project where it will be used, along with a notice giving a valid rationale for fair use. If the fair use rationale applies to Bahai.media, please contact us before uploading.
    • Example: A screenshot of a popular TV show or movie; etc.

No derivatives[edit]

At a minimum, Bahai.media requires the right to resize images so that, e.g., smaller versions of media such as thumbnails may be displayed on articles. Because legal opinions differ on whether this constitutes the creation of a derivative work, we do not allow media with licenses which prohibit derivative works.

  • Media with no-derivative licenses. Licenses that prohibit derivative works, such as Creative Commons -ND licenses, are not compatible with Bahai.media's requirements, and therefore may not be uploaded. Similarly, derivative works of media originally published with a no-derivative license must not be uploaded.
    • Example: Creative Commons BY-ND, BY-ND-SA; etc.

Guidelines[edit]

  • All copyright and licensing tags should be put on a line of their own.
  • Along with a tag, specify the source or copyright holder information. Provide as much detail as possible.
  • If an image is not licenced under a standard license, please specify what the actual license states.
  • If you tag an image as requiring attribution, please specify who needs to be attributed.
  • If multiple categories apply to an image, add all that apply.
