Caption Gov. George R. Ariyoshi of Hawaii signs into law a bill that excuses pupil absences from the state school system for religious holy days. Witnessing the signing are (left to right) Tracy Hamilton, chairman of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Hawaiian Islands; State Sen. Charles Campbell; Julius Nodel, Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Emanu-El in Honolulu; and Elizabeth Hollinger, secretary of the National Spiritual Assembly. The new law, which benefits children of every religion, is the result of 19 years of work by the Bahá’í community of Hawaii. It was supported by the Jewish, Christian and Buddhist communities.
