עברית: עכו היא אחת מערי הנמל העתיקות בעולם, ודברי ימיה המתועדים מתחילים בתקופת הברונזה הקדומה. במשך שנים רבות הייתה עיר מפתח לכיבוש ארץ ישראל, שכן מיקומה על רצועת החוף הרחבה אפשר גישה נוחה דרך הגליל אל פנים הארץ. היא ידעה עליות ומורדות ועברה מיד ליד פעמים רבות. עכו הגיעה לשיאה כאשר שימשה כבירת ממלכת ירושלים במאה ה-13 וכבירתו של אחמד אל-ג'זאר בסוף המאה ה-18.
